The project prompt was to create an infographic in any style to inform an audience of our choosing about a social, political, or environmental problem.
I chose to cover the issue of the overfishing and killing of sharks by humans. I wanted to put into perspective the amount of killing that humans do by comparing it to the amount of shark caused deaths on humans.
When I started my sketching process, I primarily focused on how to chunk my information in a logical way with good flow. I struggled with wanting to have an interesting and attention grabbing lead while also trying to maintain the audience's attention throughout the infographic.
I complied lots of inspiration from existing infographics with topics similar to mine so I could reference what I liked and disliked about them while creating my own piece. I also created a style tile with anticipated colors, fonts, and graphics I planned to use in my design.
Process Work
When developing my design I started with a black and white composition of it. One of the biggest struggles I overcame while working on this project was turning my text into visually appealing graphics. People's reading habits revolve around skimming which is why I wanted to prioritize creating graphics for the audience to still understand the content even if they were not reading every word.
Takeaways
While designing this infographic, I learned about the importance of highlighting key words and facts that I want the audience to remember. In a world where information can be so easily accessible I must provide a simple, eye-catching solution for the user to immediately get the important information before they lose interest.
If I were to do another project like this one, I would spend more time at the beginning figuring out how to deliver all the information I want in a concise manner. Once I already had the information in the infographic, I found it much harder to cut down on so I would eliminate that hard step by spending more time to figure out how to present my content.
